Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) is South Africa's national greening organization that develops, manages and promotes greening, climate change, sustainable natural resource management and food security programmes. FTFA's programmes contribute to poverty alleviation, improved environments, capacity building and skills development, increasingly for people infected and affected by AIDS. In the past 18 years FTFA has distributed over 3 million trees and helped to set up over 200 organic food gardens for the poorest in the country. FTFA's work has been recognized internationally and the organization and its founder CEO Jeunesse Park have been acknowledged through many awards; some of which include, the United Nations Environmental Programme Sasakawa Climate Change Award, United Nations Global 500 Laureate, the President Nelson Mandela Forestry Award, and the Eskom Chairman's Award.
Many clinics, communities and schools throughout the country apply to FTFA for assistance to develop food gardens. FTFA raises funds to assist as many applicants as possible through the provision of training and access to materials and resources.
The Pioneer Foods Fund will contribute towards the Pula-Madibogo Primary School Permaculture (natural) Project. The school is situated approximately 600 kilometers form JHB in the town of Sovenga (near Polokwane). The school began their permaculture project in 2001 after attending a Woolworths Trust EduPlant workshop at a nearby school. The project now boasts 48 educators, parents and community members actively involved in the food garden.
